STATEMENT
of the Russian participants
of the International Network – Youth Human Rights Movement (YHRM)
on the armed conflict between Russia and Georgia
For a few days already Russia is at war. A war which is going on on our behalf, but in breach both of the UN mandate and the Constitution of the Russian Federation. A war called a “peacemaking operation”, but leading to the death of civilians. A war that every new day is motivated with more and more lies and seeds more and more hatred. A war which is accompanied with inaction of the world’s intergovernmental organizations and mutual accusations of double standards.
Though the war is taking place on one territory, the hatred, the interethnic discord and the militaristic propaganda are spreading far beyond its borders, and thereby the war affects not only our friends and colleagues in the zone of military actions – it has also come to our towns and to our homes. We invite you to become authors of the next issue of the antifascist magazine ”Open city” ”The extreme right and the authorities – love-hate relationship” (draft title), devoted to the recent advances of extreme-right political parties and politicians.
In recent years, politicians, that promote nationalist ideas, have been coming to power and are taking high positions in their states throughout Europe. While the official policies talk of promoting Human Rights and values of democracy, and the national legislations prohibit incitement of hatred, the ideas of extreme-right penetrate mainstream politics and the public opinion, even in the societies where the majority condemns fascism and Nazism.
We think it is important to highlight the problem of extreme right politicians and ideologists gaining votes and penetrating mainstream politics by using different tactics and tools to make their rhetoric and position legitimate and appropriate for voters. Our idea is not just to understand the methods that nationalists use legitimize themselves, but also to collect examples of the efficient actions of confronting this trend. (Läs mer…)
We believe that today, as never before citizens – representatives of the different ethnic groups need to be united and consolidated. Public Movement “Multinational Georgia” welcomes good will of the Georgian government, namely the moratorium on the cease fire and the provision of the humanitarian corridor through village Ergneti, which we believe is a step forward towards the resolution of the situation in the region and establishment of peace.
